Working at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, he wrote al-Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wa'l-Muqabalah, which gave algebra its name, and a book that spread Hindu–Arabic numerals.
The word "algorithm" comes from the Latin form of his name.
