A student of Imam Malik, he wrote al-Risalah, the first systematic work on the principles of jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh). He settled in Egypt, where he died.
The Shafiʿi school is followed widely in Egypt, East Africa, Yemen and South-East Asia.
