Biography
ʿUmar was a strong and feared man of Quraysh who at first opposed Islam. His acceptance of Islam strengthened the Muslims greatly, and they began to pray openly at the Kaʿbah.
As the second Caliph for about ten years he was known for justice, humility and accountability. The Muslim state expanded to Syria, Iraq, Egypt and Persia; he established the Hijri calendar, organised administration, and is remembered for checking on his people at night. He was martyred while leading the dawn prayer in 23 AH.
